Bloody interlaced!

I discovered something not so good today when shooting this concept footage…. (More details of how that went later…)

The Sony HVR-Z1E, which is what we’re using on Roy’s Odyssey, only allows you to do PAL, NTSC or 1080i…. I was sure (must have dreamt it) that you could do 720p on it, which is what I was going to persuade the production team to use….

So we’re going to be working interlaced all the way, it seems!

Ah well - I’m capturing the footage now, and I’ll post again once I’ve got it all ready!

I feel for you. One would expect a camcorder like that to have a 720p on it.

Personally, I hate interlaced footage. At work where I’ve worked for the past few days I’ve got to work with HD footage and loved it. I never want to see any more interlaced footage again :)

So this is kinda going to slow everything dow, huh?

I’m sure I read that it did 720p, but looking at the manual when we were there, it turned out not….

I hope it’s not going to cause too much of a problem - I’m going to speak to some of the TV guys at work and find out if there’s anything specifically different that they do when working with interlaced footage…

If we’ve got a choice between working with progressive PAL or interlaced HD, we’ll definately be going the HD route - just be a little more interesting for us on the VFX side!

  3. Žiga Says:

Hm…it really is weird that it doesn’t have 720p.

But interlaced footage can’t be fun even if it is HD. It’s still lines and even de-interlacing isn’t extremely helpful. But I guess that you probably have more experience with dealing with interlaced footage (You did after all write a post about it :) )

    Good luck with that :)

In the old world we had PAL vs NTSC now we have interlaced vs. progressive. It’s a battle of formats. Sony wants their 1080i to win while Panasonic is forcing it’s 720p. Progressive NTSC from Z1 (cineframe30) is not what you want. The funny thing about this camera is that when it comes to recording in DVCAM, the picture is much worse then if using PD-170. The Z1 is all about HDV 1080i. I just can’t wait to see the 1080p camera from JVC.

P.S. The new JVC HDV cam blows Z1 away. Check it out! 4:2:2 on analog output!

  5. Hugh Macdonald Says:

Yeah - I’ve read stuff about the JVC one - would love to get my hands on one!

The Z1E belongs to the production company, so that’s what we’re using…

Anyway, I’m just putting together a post on how it all went yesterday - should appear soon…

  6. Žiga Says:

emm… I’ve believe I’ve seen something on some site Saying that Sony HVR-Z1E had something in progressive mode…

    http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/gimme/storereframe.php?view=item&item=sony_hvr-z1e

Quote: “The HVR-Z1E offers the capability to provide a cinema-look to your production images using CineframeTM 25 Mode (25 frame progressive-look effect) and 2-mode Cinematone GammaTM.”

It cut of half of my comment (weird):

    it cut it again :\

After the link there was supposed to be: ” - I did not know that, it makes me feel like an arse :S” probably because I’ve used the < symbol and not the code for it :\

  9. Hugh Macdonald Says:

When you do a link, are you doing the whole “<a href=” stuff? Cos that’d help (and save me having to go and edit your links so that they actually work…) ;)

  10. Žiga Says:

no… I just copied the link… but when I tried to make an arrow like this <- I’ve used the direct symbol and it obviously thought it was code and it stripped it. (I kinda like using arrows pointing at text ;) )

  11. Hugh Macdonald Says:

ah yes - that would make sense…

It probably thought that you were trying to hack the blog by leaving unclosed tags in there…. you’ll have to use < in future…

  12. -J- Says:

Z1 has progressive mode only in SD. So you get to choose from cineframe25(PAL) and cineframe24 or 30(NTSC). It sucks :) If you want to shoot progressive SD get the Panasonic DVX-100A

  13. Virum Says:

Personally, I wouldn’t get a new HD camera with progressive just yet; Panasonic is releasing what looks like to be a killer HD camera, the HVX-200. It’ll be priced around 6,000 dollars without the p2 cards (their solid state record medium), and around 9,000 for 2 p2 cards (forget the size, 8 gb I think). It’s scheduled to be released the last quarter of this year since it’s still in development.

I’ve heard bad things about the progressive modes on the Sony prosumer cameras, so I don’t know if you’re really missing a whole lot…. *shrug*
